Generational Mis-identification

A high school classmate described herself on Facebook as a "child of the Sixties." A better description for a member of the high school class of 1981 might be a "child in the Sixties" and part of the Seventies as well.

High school class of '81 myself. Until I got to college I was purely a child of the '70s, mainly because my slice of rural Vermont was not covered by the appropriate radio stations. Instead of the dreamland of '70s free-form FM stations all I had was 2 heavily-formatted Top 40 AM stations.

Once I got to college and performed the early '80s ritual of taping every single LP I could get my hands on (oh, how I remember the LP inner sleeves printed with "home taping is killing music") I became a child of the music of the '60s without becoming a child of the '60s themselves. Something about growing up in a military family (Zoomie version) just might have had something to do with that.
