It's actually a redemptive part of the story -- a guy who sunk so low (by being in a self-created situation where he had to shoot first) was able to redeem himself. Lucas' changing that part was an utter betrayal of the story.
Oh, and with Cliff Lee, Philadelphia delenda est!
