Shipping Out

Our pool is having its annual adult members only pool party this weekend. The theme this year is "The Love Boat," with attendees encouraged to dress up as their favorite cast members or guest stars.

I may say that I am extremely suspicious of some of the names on the Wiki entry for Love Boat guest stars. Some of them seem impossibly young. (Courtney Cox? Michael J. Fox?) Some of them seem like fish out of water. (Anthony Andrews? Vincent Price?)

(Granted, I stopped watching TLB in the early 80's, so perhaps "doing" it got to be more hip later in the series' life.)

Aaaaaanyway, supposing I was to go to this party and supposing I was even to dress up for it, the question is: Who should ol' Robbo be?

And don't bother saying "Charo" because that's already under consideration.

Dude, *EVERYBODY* did the Love Boat back in the day, so none of those names surprise me.

You should be Gopher.

Didn't Rip Taylor do a turn on The Boat? Take a bag of confetti and you're set.

Considering your gender, I'd go with Isaac. Julie would be my second choice.

Dude, so many things come to mind....but I'll be nice and say of course you need to go as Captain Stubing...Mrs. Robbo can go as Charo!!

Oh, please! The choice is obvious! Robbo=Gopher!

I'd vote for Julie -- just don't do the whole cocaine thing though.

Captain Stubing.

Was there ever a Chug Boat/Fantasy Island crossover?

Posted by: Captain Ned at July 15, 2010 05:36 PM

I've always felt that ST:TNG was a continuation not of Star Trek, but of Love Boat. Think about it:

Bald but debonair captain: Stubing/Picard
Older but still attractive to the opposite sex ship's Doctor: Bricker/Crusher
Airhead in charge of morale: Julie NcCoy/Deanna Troi
Token black bartender/Dispenser of wisdom: Isaac/Guinan
Annoying child of a crew member: Vicki/Wesley

Still haven't figured out who's Gopher yet, leaning towards Worf or Barkley.

Okay... Spill it... As whom did you go to the pool party?

Posted by: The Maximum Leader at July 19, 2010 07:55 AM

Stop leaving us to hang here, Robbo. Do tell.

B.B. - They started out the series with Data playing the role of "Gopher". Sure, he was wicked smart, but he was totally clueless in the personal interaction department.

Reg Barkley took over the "clueless" role when he joined the cast, because Data had emotionally matured enough that his cluelessness wasn't as apparent.

Now I'm going to go flog myself for knowing enough about this topic to offer an opinion.
