Why is NPR's Jean Cochrane suddenly saying, "EEEE-ran"?
Is that the hip, new, Worldy-wise pronunciation?

No. The the hip, new, Worldy-wise pronunciation is EEEE-rahn.
Posted by: Fear and Loathing In Georgetown at June 18, 2009 01:58 PMI've been getting tired of hearing eye-RAN, when ear-RAHN is the proper pronunciation. And everybody says Ahmahdinejad's name wrong. It's "Ah-mahd-ni-jahd." Four syllables, not five or six.
On the other hand, I'm hypocritically annoyed by "proper" pronunciations of place names by the media like "Budapeshhhhht" and "Hawa-EE." Oh please.
