When Mommies Flip Out

This is a humorous article on mothers who panic over their child complaining of some ailment or another. My mother had no such inclinations--she did not get concerned unless one or more of the following was present: high fever, projectile vomiting, a lot of spots, respiratory distress, wounds requiring sutures, or broken bones. Otherwise, it was treated with a kiss and early bedtime. Think I'm kidding? I told her I could not see the chalkboard when I was in the fifth grade and was promptly sent to bed. A few months later, I came home with note from the school nurse which reported that I could read only the top line on the eye chart. Glasses have been part of my life ever since.

With my kids it's a dose of Motrin and an early bedtime.

Fortunately, Jesse hasn't gotten too ill in his 2 short years. However, he has konked his head too many times to count on random hard surfaces including this morning on the kitchen floor. My reaction? Disbelieving laughter (that he again knocked his head) and some snuggle time until the crying stops. Then it's a kiss on the forehead and he's off playing again like nothing happened.

I fear the day his head is more seriously injured - it will come, the question is how soon.

Kids bounce. We once took Son #2 to the ER with a large bump on his head when Son #1 tried to pick him up and dropped him. The bump was gone by the time the PA examined him two hours later....

Heh. Everytime I came home and told Dad I broke a bone falling at school, he would tell me if it still hurt tomorrow, we could think about going to get it looked at. There was *always* a fracture on the X-ray, and he *never* believed I wasn't trying to get out of my chores.

Do kids today even have chores?
