Playing the Fawn Liebowitz Gambit

The Llamas are in, baybee!

Because we've been keeping up with the coedification crisis at Randolph Macon Woman's College, we're not only high up in most Google searches on the subject, we're starting to get linked by some of the Randy Mac bloggers themselves.

Honest, we're real cut up over all of this. In fact, we really don't think we should be alone.....

"This is the cost of VMI, young Padewan."

Well, in all fairness, the VMI coedification was a legal issue, i.e., whether the Equal Protection Clause prohibited a single-sex public school.

With Randy Mac, it appears to be a matter of pure economics. The Board of Trustees evidently feels it can't compete in the single sex market and has decided to take a stab at the wider coed market.

Equal Protection may have been the legal tool used to force Coeds onto VMI, but the suspicion many of us have is of a double-standard: Most people of a certain political bent, and particularly those of that bent AND a particular chromosomal set, can't stand the idea of a male-only school, and will use whatever means available to them -- legal recourse in the case of a public school like VMI, publicity and market forces in the case of a private -- to force women on such schools, but when the shoe is on the other foot, and those icky boys darken the doorstep of their beloved female-only institutions, they have a hissy, even if the market forces really do seem to favor "coedification". Somehow it's "sexist" to exclude women from one school, but "Empowering" to exclude them from another. Sauce and large waterfowl, you know....
