Gratuitous Pre-Holiday Crankiness Posting

RESOLVED: Valentine's Day as currently "celebrated" is nothing but an exercise in the cynical manipulation of mawkish sentimentality and consumer guilt orchestrated by the Hallmark-FTD-Zales cabal and its allies, and therefore should be pointedly ignored.

UPDATE: Your (manly) Maximum Leader has more to say on the subject.

This is one day I'm glad to be single -- no need to do any of that Valentines crap.

You might enjoy vacationing in Saudi Arabia then.

CNN says
"As Muslims we shouldn't celebrate a non-Muslim celebration, especially this one that encourages immoral relations between unmarried men and women, " Sheikh Khaled Al-Dossari, a scholar in Islamic studies, told the Saudi Gazette, an English-language newspaper.

Saudi Arabia has banned all red flowers and items until after Valentines Day

Gifts of flowers and chocolates cause unmarried Muslim women to do immoral things? Hello? Haven't we heard of holding out for a Mercedes? Gosh...

No wonder those who kill in the name of Allah are rewarded with 72 in Paradise. Virgins have to be hard to come by.

Mrs. P,

That reminds me of the old joke about the woman who saw a girlfriend of hers with a new fur coat, and indignantly said, "You've got a fur coat? I've been struggling for years to get one." Her friend turned to her and whispered, "Stop struggling."

Abbot, your last comment made me chuckle loudly.

Since Valentine's Day falls during Lent this year, any offering of chocolates to the ol' keysunset will definitely be seen as an attack on my religion ... but then at Easter -- bring on the BUNNY. ;-)

Resolved: If Saudi Arabia fears that simple gifts of chocolate and flowers causes young unmarried Muslims to do immoral acts, then an Islamic Theocracy is, in effect, a Ninny State.
