For The Birds

bald-eagle.gif

While out with the five year old yesterday afternoon as she tried out her new bike on the sidewalk in front of the house, I happened to look up and damme if I didn't see a bald eagle flying about (pursued by a pack of very testy crows).

I've read that the eagle population is steadily growing in the Chesapeake region and that a couple of them have taken to nesting up at Great Falls park, but this is the first time I've ever seen one over our house. (We're maybe two, three miles from the Potomac in a straight line.)

It was magnificent.

Certainly much better than a flock of vultures.

Oh, we have those too, of course.

In my moodier moments, I threaten to feed the kids to them.

I once watched an eagle harassed by a seagull, a very upset seagull. I didn't know it was common to have eagles pursued by anything but I'm sure they deserve it. We have about 15 minutes of video taken watching that action, it was on one of the marine parks along Vancouver Island.

Same thing, according to Teddy Roosevelt. Bald eagles are 'nothing more than dandified vultures', according to the Bull Moose.

Sweet. I don't think I've ever seen one.

Spotting an eagle means good luck. Good luck!

I see them all the time around here -- including one flying along I-5 near Albany that was way lower than I ever expected an eagle to be. And I've blogged about the other observation before -- the smaller birds always harass the bigger. I've seen an osprey harrassing an eagle, ravens attacking an osprey, crows on the ravens, etc. The hummingbirds, of course, are feared by all.
