Quote of the day

San Franciscans come up with their own variation on James Q. Wilson's "broken window" theory:

"Maybe there has been an epiphany," says David Latterman, president of Fall Line Analytics, a local market research firm. "People have realized they can hate George Bush but still not want people crapping in their doorway."

The comments on the story's site are confirmation of the theory, they run very heavily to the conclusion that something needs to be done.

Mrs. C. and I were there last year; every public building/square/park had congregations of the homeless, looking, sadly, like nothing so much as clusters of large, untidy pigeons.

There needs to be some kind of triage: the mentally ill need to be in hospitals, the drunks/junkies need to be in rehab, and the criminals need to be in jail. It's not that difficult.

The "tragedy of the commons" occurs all on its own in a society; it hardly needs encouragement. Yet for the last 30 years, San Francisco has done precisely that.

The homeless problem is the easy part. The politican who cleans it up will be hailed as the next Giuliani. But the real question is which politician will touch the third rail of SF politics and take on the disgusting public orgy that the Folsom Street Fair has become (check out Zombietime's photo expose of it if you have a strong stomach).
