A Little Touch Of Mickey In The Night
So about five ack emma this morning, Bella the Cat caught herself a mouse. Being a generous soul, she decided to bring it into our bedroom so that we had, as it were, ringside seats as she settled down to torment it. The conversation went something like this:
Mouse: Squeeeeeeek!
Missus: Has Bella got a mouse?
Self: Umph.
Missus: Oooooh!
Mouse: Squeeeeek!
Self: Umph.
Missus: Oooh, do you think it's in pain?
Self: Umph.
Mouse: Squeeeeeek!
Missus: Ooooooh!
Self:
Mouse: Squeeeeeek!
Missus: Ooooooh, the poor thing! You're going to deal with the mess!
Self: Umph.
And so on, until Bella, tiring of batting the thing 'round our room, removed it to the hall and (apparently) launched it down the stairs.
As a matter of fact, I did try to deal with things when I got up, but I couldn't find the (presumed) corpse. I seriously doubt if the little blighter wound up escaping, and can only imagine that Bella dumped what's left of its mangled body somewhere about the place.
While the Missus is a bit of a holdover from an early 50's sitcom on the subject of mice, the Llama-ettes are made of sterner stuff. I had only to say, "Oh, the cat got a mouse last night, gels. Be on the lookout for it." Their response? Cool!

When I awoke, the dog was sleeping at my feet, right next to the sister's dead hamster...

These buggers must be part puma because they spend most of their say patrolling a retaining wall I have in the back yard looking for critters: mice, chipmunks, frogs, whatever. (yes, the wife saw one munching on a frog carcass once)
These cats live to hunt. And while I'll admit, it creeps me out at "Pet Sematary" proportions when I see them constantly stalking outside but I haven't seen a single mouse turd anywhere in my basement since.

When ECD and I were dealing with mice in her basement, Mr. Kitty presented a dead one to me every morning for three days straight. The last was a puny baby mouse, so he managed to kill all but Mama Mouse. The folks who bought the house had to deal with her.
Posted by: jen at October 5, 2007 08:48 AMI've got a 150-year old house so mouse elimination isn't in the picture; it's more like mouse management. Two cats, and there's always fresh kill on the front porch every morning.
I was not amused, though, about the dead mouse I found in one of my shoes one morning. I hadn't worn them for awhile and the mouse was pretty ripe.

That stated, said dumb cat was smart enough to get a squirrel, and deposit what was left of it - the head just forward of the ears, and the last three inches of the tail, on the front porch....

She was a runt -- full-grown she wasn't much bigger than a kitten, but she was the most frighteningly deadly mouser I've ever seen. She would drag in to us the carcasses of animals that approached her own body mass -- gophers, mice, nothing was safe. She'd even take full grown birds before the could fly off.
