It's a "Freaks and Geeks" Generation thing, you wouldn't understand

Thirty years ago today: where were you when you learned that Elvis was "dead"?

UPDATE: GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE DEPT. Kelly at Kelly's Green posed the same question.

And the correct answer is "poolside at the Hyatt in Orlando, Florida, while my Dad was attending the Academy of Management convention."

I am 45.

30 years ago Elvis was so irrelevant to me that I have no idea what I was doing when I heard he was dead.

I'm 49.

Though I wasn't an Elvis fan at the time, my mom was when I was very little, and I grew up listening to him as background music in my house as I played (Explains a lot).

I was leaving my folks house for a date with a hippie chick I was into at the time (Led Zeppelin, weed, and hippie chicks: Not exactly in that order) when a neighbor kid ran up to me yelling, "Elvis Presley is dead!... Elvis Presley is dead!"

I was genuinely shocked, and to this day I still don't really know why.

I was 13 at the time and stuck in the back of a van on its way back to my summer camp. We'd been off on an outing to Montreal's Olympic Stadium to see a baseball game and on our return every station the crappy AM radio in the van could pick up was playing Elvis tunes. Neither me, the rest of the kids, nor the 20-something counselors leading the trip were in the least enthused by a 2-hour ride with nothing but Elvis to listen to.

I was 9, but I grew up in a home with a mother who grew up in the 50's, so Elvis was dearly loved in our household.

We were on a family trip with 2 of my aunts from a small town in southern Idaho up to Sun Valley when the news came over the radio.

I second the "Elvis was so irrelevant" comment. He seems even more irrelevant today.

I was standing in the morning chow line at an Army mess hall in (then) West Germany.

And people who deem Elvis irrelevent are wrong.

I'm 38.

30 years ago I was camping out alot, watching the Pittsburgh Pirates (they used to be good), riding my bike, looking forward too football season (the Pittsburgh Steelers were 2 time SB champs, on there way to winning 2 more in the 70's). I never gave Elvis any thought at all. Still don't.
