Ha! Serenity beats Star Wars as the top Sci-Fi movie in a magazine poll:

Space thriller Serenity has beaten Star Wars to the title of best sci-fi movie in an SFX magazine poll of 3,000 fans. The futuristic release from 2005 was based on the short-lived TV series Firefly. Both were the work of Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon.

Star Wars - which Whedon has conceded had "an enormous influence" on Serenity - came second in the survey.

Blade Runner was third, followed by Planet of the Apes, The Matrix, Alien and Forbidden Planet.

Shiny!

What, no Logan's Run? No 2001? No Khaaaan!?

Kids these days. I tell you.

Yeah. And I sincerely hope that for Apes they mean Heston, not Wohlberg.

On the other hand, I have to confess that I've never made it all the way through 2001 without dozing off.

I like the way the pictures in the article show a connection between Serenity and Star Wars, with mavrick captains and talented pilots st the helms of the all-important vessels.

And I'm with Robbo on 2001. I've always felt it was a movie I SHOULD like...but I always end up sleeping through at least half of it.

I think 2001 would be immensely improved if they cut back on the whole 'Bowman goes to ludicrous speed' sequence. That'd cut what, ten minutes out of the film? I can't be for sure, 'cause I inevitably nod off during it.

Bummer for the potheads, bonanza for the rest of us.

Meanwhile, that some Whedon pastiche could top Star Wars is a sign of artistic and cultural decline.

Hey! I know that guy! He used to be Joey on One Life to Live!

2001 needs to be seen on the big screen -- it made the rounds around 1991, I got to see a restored copy then. Impressive. Enough so so that I won't get the DVD. 20" tv won't do it justice.
