Gratuitous Religious Observation

I've always loved the cartoons of George Booth. Here is one that has always been a particular favorite in my family:

Last evening I was musing on the comments of some of y'all around here to the effect that I really am a Catholic in Episcopal clothing and suddenly (for some odd reason) thought of this cartoon again.

I 'bout fell out of my chair laughing.

UPDATE: Cue Twilight Zone music. Today I received in the mail a nice note from one of my R.C. well-wishers (in fact the Peregrinator over at Canterbury Tales), together with a nice Cardinal Newman card:

Not that I especially believe in signs or anything, but Just Because I nipped over to Amazon and bought a copy of his Apologia. It seems fitting.

(BTW, I defy anybody to find another blogpost linking a Booth cartoon and an Anglican-to-R.C. convert.)

The general opinion being that you and the Pope need to go and get a room.

Preferably a confessional.

Steve,
Last December you mentioned that you were impacted by a priest who criticized your singing when you were a child. Well, let Robbo sing, dern it. Or whistle. He won't be alone:

Fr. M is onto something here. Given A) our open arms as Catholics to all those who are considering joining us, and B) our extreme shortage of priests, perhaps we should make our invitations BYOP -- bring your own priest. Bringing in more Episcopal (and other) priests would help us more clearly question the current partial ban on married Catholic priests.

Just think -- if we were to openly allow the return of some of the RC men who were ordained priests in our church but left to participate in the sacrament of marriage -- well, it'd be a whole new ballgame.

Not likely to happen this week. But we're running out of options here in CT. So don't just join -- bring half your congregation and a padre or two. We'll leave the light on for you...

How about BYOB -- bring your own bishop?

Funny you should mention that...

Last year, in response to my family's shock & outrage at discovering that I'm no longer a catholic, and at the same time discovering we had some Jewish ancestors, who like your wife's family, were forced to decide to convert or leave for more welcoming shores, I wrote an "Apologia" post of my own. It did start off with a booth-like cartoon and then went in to a theological treatise of my choice of why I was finally leaving my years of catholic education and my mother's religion and converting to my father's.

I didn't finish because it pointed out many of the major historical, political and liturgical failures of the catholic church and its leaders, and would only deepen the chasm already in existence between us. Besides, I don't think my readers would care to read such a theological treatise. There used to the vacuous silliness I sometimes post (I haven't mastered your style yet) and it would only ostracize my catholic readers and bore all the rest.

Maybe I'll dust it off and finish it someday and when I do I"ll link back!
