Happy Groundhog Day

Looks like the little rodent didn't see his shadow this year and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic states we're not exactly having a normal winter. So Yip! Yip! to that.

But today reminds me of one of my favorite Bill Murray movies - you know it, you love it - "Groundhog Day".

Jonah Goldberg has a must-read column in his archives that pays tribute to this classic and its philosophical brilliance (yes, I said brilliance). Check it out here.

And Robbo, since you're home today, you can watch it at 1pm on Comedy Central. Put down that "honey-do" list and enjoy the day!

Yips! from Robbo: I am ashamed to confess that although I've seen this movie maybe four or five times, I have never managed to stay awake all the way through. It's never been the movie itself, just the circs in which I've seen it. Must remedy that, but I'm not sure I want to arouse the Spousal Wrath by doing so this afternoon.

My wife and I often enjoin each other not to "drive angry."

I attended a wedding of a college friend in the mid 90's that was held at her father's farm near Woodstock Illinois. As you (probably don't) know, Woodstock is the town where they filmed "Groundhog Day". We had a great time wandering around the town square and spouting off lines like "Ned! Ned Ryerson!" at the tops of our lungs.

Their union only lasted five years, but I had a great time at the wedding, for the following reasons:

1. My old buddy Coop and I found an establishment we promptly named "The Greatest Liqour Store in the World". This is the store where I developed my taste for JW Dundee's Honey Brown, and four cases of that heavenly brew accompanied me back to Iowa on Sunday morning.

2. Since this wedding occured "pre-Mrs. Russ", I spent the whole weekend bird-dogging the maid of honor. We had a great time going to the local bar in Harvard (about 15 miles NW of Woodstock) with Coop & several other members of our circle of friends the night before the wedding, and the M.O.H. and I went out on a couple of dates after we returned to Iowa.

Did I mention that I really liked the movie too?

GHD is my favorite romantic comedy of all time. I watch the DVD almost every year... right about this time. It IS brilliant.
