Happy Birthday, Mr. Saavik!

Saavik.jpg

Kirstie Alley was born today in 1951 in Witchita, Kansas.

I know she's crazy as a loon and that her Rebecca Howe could never replace the lovely Diane Chambers on Cheers, but I'll always have a soft spot for her owing to her role in probably the greatest sci fi movie ever made.

Best Saavik exchange:

SAAVIK: By the book?

KIRK: By the book! Regulation Forty-six-A: 'If transmissions are being monitored during battle...'

SAAVIK: '...no uncoded messages on an open channel...' (to Spock) You lied.

SPOCK: I exaggerated.

UPDATE: Because it's Friday and because I can.....

Mmmm.....Diane.....mmmmm.

Okay, shut up. So I had a thing about borderline-psychotic Brit Lit majors (see Robbo's Girlfriends: High School, College). You have a problem with that?

Yes, but to me she will always be uber-abolitionist Virgilia Hazard from North and South.

Whenever I see Kirstie, I always wonder what old Frank Hardy (Parker Stevenson) of the Hardy Boys is up to these days.

Little known fact (from the IMDB): When they were both starting out she shared an apartment with Mimi Rogers.

Let's see, late 70's/early 80's, Kirstie and Mimi, snuggled on the couch watching TV, loose-fitting pajamas, a little too much wine...

Sadly, Diane could stand in for most of the women I've been involved with. And I still thought she was hot. I have no perceptible learning curve.

See, Gary, this is why comments can be so evil sometimes. Mention of Mimi Rogers meant that I had to go to Netflix and rent Lost in Space, a movie that I don't even like very much.

Now I'm thinking Maureen Robinson and, say, Seven of Nine, sitting in the crew quarters watching the vid.......

Great, I just HAD to go back to IMDB and find out that Mimi Rogers auditioned for the Kathleen Turner role in "Body Heat".

Okay, it's 1981, Mimi and Kathleen are sitting on the casting couch, the air conditioning is broken, Mimi is cooling herself off with an ice cube. Kathleen wants to help her out. ARRRGGGHH!

Oh, and Mimi Rogers posed for Playboy in 1993. And you just KNOW someone out there has scanned them and posted them on their website. And someone could find them if they spent enough time looking...

Damn you Al Gore for inventing the Internet!!!
