Disgruntled generals

and the theater of the absurd rages on with stories of "embattled" defense secretary Rumsfeld. At any given time, there about three hundred general officers in the Army, including the Army Reserve and the National Guard, with probably several times that on the retired rolls, not counting the other services. Grumbling by six is hardly representative of the general officer corps. I note that one, Zinni, is a former Clinton appointee who seems more jealous of the success of Tommy Franks at CENTCOM than anything else. Riggs, according to one report, was forced to retire last year at reduced rank on one-day's notice for "adverse command climate" which to me suggests that he was given a choice of immediate retirement for the good of the service or face very unpleasant scrutiny. Batiste publicly contradicted the SecDef on troop levels while still on active duty which cannot be expected to be career-enhancing. This sounds more like bruised egos than anything else.

Come on guys, this is a classic tactic of the media.

"Some people say..." "Some lawmakers believe..." "Some police are concerned..."

Hell, some people say the world is flat, but that doesn't mean I should listen to them. But whenever the MSM wants to beat a dead horse, they find "some people" who support their position, and just ignore the 99.99999% of the population who doesn't think the world is flat.

Wesley Clark has now joined the disgruntled retired ranks. So, there are now 7...
New MSM spin; It's a growing trend!

I don't know if you've read Colin Powell's autobiography, but one of the best things in it is the speech Powell said they gave when he and a group of about 50 "new" brigadier generals were brought to the Pentagon. The briefer said something to the effect that some of them, the moment they put the star on, would think that they were now infallible, and would let the perception of increased power go to their heads. Others would let their wives think that they were generals, now, too. But the briefer concluded by saying "if you were all on a plane and it crashed, the 50 colonels we'd replace you with would probably do just as good a job." Which Powell found to be somewhat humbling.

I've met a handful of general officers in my life. All of them had pretty healthy egos. It does not surprise me that a few of these guys want to revel in the glory and adulation of the press now that they are out of the limelight. And given that Rumsfeld is overseeing a massive change in the structure of the Army (the brigade as the basic fighting unit instead of the division) and what that change implies (more "colonel" command slots, fewer "general" command slots), the criticism hardly surprises me. Some of them are no doubt motivated by good intentions. And some of them are probably just being *ssholes. I don't doubt that the number of retired generals who hate Rumsfeld numbers in the dozens, and they see all the changes as bad -- generals being famous for always wanting to fight the last war. The press found 6 of them. I don't doubt that they could find another 6 for the "growing chorus of retired generals" story which they'll run next month.

Thanks Babs. Hugh Shelton, the JCS Chairman whose tenure spanned the end of the Clinton Administration and the first part of Bush's, said that Clark came out of his last command early for "integrity issues". No more needs to be said.

Should the nation have listened to the disgruntled former general George McClellan in 1864, instead of his war-mongering opponent who unconstitutionally suspended habeas corpus?
