'Fins Watch

An alert reader sent in this link that suggests that Nick Sabin is playing things pretty smart down in Miami in terms of trying to make the best of the screwed up NFL labor situation.

But what I found especially funny was the pundits' advice in the comment thread, to which I have just three words to say:

Jeff farookin George? Are you kidding me?

Well, that's seven, but you get my point.

Tough choices.

I always found that in Madden, the guy you cannot get around having is a marquee quarterback. Getting around the cap you can be ruthless as hell with the expenses of everyday players, even All Pros -- as Belichick has shown in the real world -- but you go signing Jeff George and his ilk and you'll be looking at a 7-9 year at best. The road from 7-9 to 12-4 with a Superbowl appearance is all predicated on that one guy, and he's nearly impossible to get.

It's easier to go 2-14, draft a guy who hopefully won't get hurt, and bring him along for a few years while you purge all your old guys and hope your 20 -something free agents and draft picks blossom. Do it right and you've got a potential dynasty. Do it wrong, and you're the Arizona Cardinals.

Saban can coach, and he has the team going in the right direction. But without that QB they'll never break through.
