"Wonder-Twin Powers, Activate!"

Olympic.jpg

Zan: "Form of - Gumby's inbred ice cousin!"

Jayna: "Shape of - his sister-bride!"

(Just felt like saying that. By the way - unless you're Italian, it's "Turin" not "Torino", dammit.)

BTW, I doubt if I'll watch much of it at all.

No, dammit, it's torino! When Italy applied for the games several years ago, they used the word Torino (duh!) on the application. When the IOC awarded the games to Torino, they also used that "foreign" word. Hence, the official site is Torino. Ciao, baby (and I'm not Italian).

Feh. When you start saying "Moskva" and "Warszawa" on a regular basis, come back and talk to me.

Somehow the "Shroud of Torino" just doesn't work for me...

Sounds like a tarp for a Ford muscle car.

Like the old Saturday night live skit about the journalist saying Neek-a-rahh-wa for Nicaragua.

Neve and Gliz I've already blogged about.

What these bozos fail to notice is that it's only relatively cool cities that get anglicized. We naturalized Rome and Moscow, and left Foggia and Smolensk alone. The Italians ought to be flattered that every major city has a distinctive English name.

And the Indians could get a clue here. They were a lot better off with global names like Bombay and Madras than Mumbai and Chennai. And Thiruvanthapuram for Trivandrum? It is to laugh.

What? We're not supposed to say Bombay or Madras anymore?

Bugger that. I remain staunchly in the Churchillian "Peuple d'Wipers" camp.

OH, I'll watch. Pitchers and catchers aren't until Thursday, and even then nothing gets televised. But please, no skating unless they've got sticks in their hands.

Ma dai, voi americani con il vostro liguaccio! E' da vero cosi difficile pronunciare la parola corettamente?

Okay, I really don't care that much one way or the other. But why Anglophones call the city of Livorno by the name "Leghorn" I will never know.

Ah say, ah ay, what have you got against leghorns, boy?

Posted by: Brian B at February 10, 2006 02:33 PM

This is just wrong.
