WELLSTONE MEMORIAL, AGAIN
The libs will not miss an opportunity to turn a memorial service into a political rally. This, courtesy of Drudge.

hey, this is a campaign event.
Today's event was mild compared to the Wellstone funeral.
Posted by: Marvin at February 7, 2006 08:17 PMI am guessing as the widow of MLK and a true civil rights leader in her own right, Coretta Scott King would approve. Certainly the audience in attendance did. Not my place to tell them how to mourn and it isn't Drudge's either.
Posted by: LB buddy at February 8, 2006 10:25 AMLB Buddy, would it be impolite to point out that the wiretapping was ordered by RFK and approved by LBJ? Or that Carter took the position that FISA did not supercede his Administration's view that the president has inherent power to conduct suveillance on foreign powers without a warrant or that Clinton also had the same view (anyone remember Echelon)? I think good taste would have called for limiting the eulogies to Mrs. King's life and her accomplishments.

I am certainly no fan of the Kennedys or LBJ. RFK as head of project Mongoose was a terrorist. His brother, responsible for Vietnam, LBJ the continuation of those ruinous policies.
Carter did some good with energy policy (subsequently undone by Reagan) but the Carter Doctrine is largely responsible for our generally horrible foreign policy in the Middle East since the 70's. I have my problems with Clinton too that extend way beyond his positions re: FISA.
My point is this "fainting couch" position of the Republican noise machine about what is appropriate and not appropriate at a funeral. W gets his props for taking the risk and showing up at a crowd that wasn't carefully prescreened for loyalty (for once), but to condemn Coretta Scott King's colleagues and friends for an inappropriate funeral is off the mark. How would Drudge or Kate O'Beirne or any other outsider know what is appropriate?
Memorial services are to remember the dead, not score political points for the living. I do not recall Coretta Scott King holding forth on WMDs in Iraq, FISA, or response (federal, state or local) to Hurricane Katrina. To take cheap shots at a president who would be restrained by the circumstances to respond takes away from an occasion to remember a lady who gave much for the civil rights movement. The news coverage paid to such cheap shots underscores how inappropriate such remarks are.
