Reason No. 435 Why I Like Working In Dee Cee But Thank God I Don't Live There
Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, has got its own federal holiday - this year on January 16 - and the District always has a parade to honor him.
Well this year, it was decided that mid-January is a nasty time to hold a parade, so a committee headed up by our own Marion "Bitch Set Me Up" Barry came up with an alternative date with warmer and more pleasant weather.
Their choice? April First.
And why? Because King was assassinated in April.
Ladies and Gentlemen, to me nothing says "classy" more than honoring a man by moving his parade to April Fool's Day and changing it from a birthday celebration to a murder reminder.
You just can't make this sort of thing up.
Yips! to Galley Slave Victorino Matus.
Posted by Robert at January 5, 2006 01:00 PM | TrackBackNow see...if they would move the Federal holiday to April 1 as well, I could get into that. What was I reading that had someone asking about doing just this...can't remember. Anyway, the point was that it would break up the looong stretch of no-holiday time between March and Memorial Day. And I could get behind that.
Actually, maybe we could combine it with tax day! If they want to turn it into commemorating a murder, they definitely should consider making the parade the 15th - lots of Americans are already in tears that day, so it's just another reason for a good weep, right?
Hmm...maybe Barry is actually on to something...
Posted by: beth at January 5, 2006 05:02 PMDee Cee has always struck me as being to world capitals what Atlantic City is to resorts--a thin veneer of opulent glitz over miles and miles of dreary, impoverished sleaze. New Haven was a pretty similar story, the last time I was there.
I'd be more sympathetic to the Washingtonians' plight if they hadn't re-elected Barry to office. There's just no excuse for that kind of idiocy.
