Gratuitous Domestic Posting (TM)

Just got word that my six year old first grader aced her first spelling test today. Well done, indeed!

Despite my love of writing, I've always been a horrible speller myself. It would be nice if this is some kind of sign that she'll do a bit better at it than me.

Congrats to her. I, like you it seems, am not a good speller. (As readers of my blog know.) My own Princess Villainette (2nd grade) has been having some problems with spelling - but she's working harder at it and showing improvement. So you (and your wee Llama-ette) get a hearty congratulations from me.

I didn't know Montessori schools had tests. I know hers doesn't have grades --which might make one wonder how she could have 'aced' the test. Methinks perhaps she correctly spelled all the words, but I wonder if your grading mentality subtly erodes the Montessori philosophy. What thinks Mrs. Butcher?
Regardless, congratulations to your daughter -- she must be so pleased.

Yes, I should have said she got all of them right (22). No actual grade given. As a matter of fact, tests AND homework were demanded by the class parents.

I have absolutely no problem with this whatsoever. Unlike religious matters, I take a cafeteria approach to Montessori's ideas. As much as I like the free flow, cross-disciplinary practices and emphasis on working with both concrete and abstract tools, I'm also a firm believer in both instilling a recognizable corpus of knowledge in the kiddies and in testing to ensure that it has been instilled.
