Remember the past

I'm going to go out on a limb and disagree with Ace on this: I think the Republicans should dump Tom DeLay faster than Oliver Willis through the drive through window at Hardees on all-you-can-eat curly fry day.

And here's the reason why: jim wright.jpeg

I'm inclined to agree, to a point. The thing is, whoever assumes the job will also assume the mantle of Most Evil Person in the Whole Wide World, and you'll see bogus ethics charges, "drunk with power" accusations, etc. To an extent, Delay is dirty. To an extent, it is a political hit based on the job he holds. I for one hate to give the Dems any victory because it will only encourage them. So I have a pretty high threshhold for pain when it comes to removing Republican leaders.

The problem is that DeLay is dirty, and that that will be blown back on all of them, much as jim wright's implosion hurt the house dems in 1990.

I'm not so sure. The House Bank and House Post Office Scandals were of grand proportion and were easy to understand.

Hiring his daughter and wife for his campaign; taking a few junkets -- that's pretty small beer so far.

Goldstein has a story up showing Bernie Sanders (I-CCCP, er, VT) has paid out $150k to relatives. Perhaps there are differences in the cases. But still -- everyone does it is, to some extent, a valid excuse when it comes to politicians.

I personally don't like the guy much. He's not warm. But what rough beast slouches toward Captiol Hill to replace him?
