Evil Otto: No Longer Just A Video Game Character

Fellow fans of the old Berserker video game will be interested to see that Swedish scientists have invented a large, black, anti-burglar ball.

Intruder alert.....Intruder alert.....The intruder must be destroyed......

Man, did I love that game. I was also seriously into Galaga, Qix, and Spy Hunter in a really unhealthy way.

We're talking lab rat hitting the button to give himself more cubes of food unhealthy. People used to ask me if I was glad to see them or if it was a roll of quarters in my pocket. It was a roll of quarters in my pocket.

We may have had this conversation before. One thing - I swear remembering that after you had passed through a given number of levels, you could in fact destroy Otto if you pumped enough shots into him.

I miss the Cylon (oh, excuse me, ex-Cylon voices.

As for Spyhunter, how could you not help grooving to the theme from Peter Gunn?

I believe you are correct with regard to Otto. I don't think I ever got that far.

The beauty of Spy Hunter is all the variations of the Gunn theme that it rolls through -- there must be about 20 different permutations of it in the game. This is all without MP3 or today's sound card technology. It was a work of 1980s genius.

Has the video game geek conversation started without me?

Listen here kiddies, I made a quarter last 3 hours on Asteroids. I played beta versions of Battle Zone (code named "Future Tank"). While my friends were discovering girls, I was defeating the Gorgar pinball machine.

So I can tell you will all authority that you cannot kill Evil Otto. Not in Berserk.

But in the sequel, Frenzy, you could shoot through walls and kill EO. Problem was the killing was temporary. He'd be back much faster.

Oh and Colossus, the oil slick weapon was the best!

Gordo - You may be right about Berserk/Frenzy. I remember whack E.O. somewhere.

But the coolest weapon on Spy Hunter, IMHO, was getting the bad guy helicopter to bomb his own chase cars.

Nnnnnnya na na nuh na nu-i-yah nuh-na, na na nuh na nu-i-yah nuh-na....

Ah. . . Frenzy. That's right.

In Spy Hunter, they were good weapons both. The boat sequence was also fantastic.

I'm going to research it and put up a long post about it.

Colossus, When you post it, send me a tip. I'll link, TB and pimp that post!
