Chicago Recommendations?

I'm off to Chicago today for the American Politcial Science Association meeting, so posting will be lighter from me for the next couple of days.

If anyone has any suggestions for places to eat/drink/go, I'd appreciate it. I love Chicago--it's my favorite city to visit. I love walking around, soaking it all in. This time I'm staying at the Sheraton right on the river by the Wrigley Building, which is going to be fab---I've wanted to stay there for awhile. It's close to everything, except where I'm giving my paper, which is down at the (1968 Riot) Hilton, which is a bit of a hike. Oh well.

Later this fall, when the deadline is approaching for submitting a paper proposal for next year, I'm going for an all out blitz to make sure Herr Doktor Shackleford is going to go too: I'm thinking a panel on "Neo-Institutional Analysis of Attitudinal Factors Shaping News Coverage: The View From Inside the Sandcrawler" might do the trick.

Anyhoo, there's a good chance I'll be in the bar of the either the Sheraton, the Palmer House or the Riot Hilton tonight, and hey, I'm buying the first round!

(SPECIAL SECRET MESSAGE TO ROB:) My theory is correct, bay-bee! Plus, I rebooted the template and dumped the bumper sticker icons--I think they might have been too wide. Let me know how this looks.

I'm thinking Southern in the Spring. Steve the PoliPundit is already making plans. The beauty of the Palmer House is it's located in a pretty working class area next to a whole bunch of downtown branches of several colleges. Since I've only been there as a graduate student, that meant one thing: cheap eats. There's a cheap greasy spoon south of the Palmer House a couple of blocks on the East side. On the West side, and just Southward, theres a restaurant that has a basement pub that serves up some pretty good pub. I can't remember the name of any of them. Where is APSA next year??? And if you see HG, do not mention, I repeat, do not mention the blog!!!!!!!!!

I'll try not to, but you know sometimes these things slip out....

Welcome to Chicago! In terms of fun places to eat/drink, most of the places downtown are chains or super tourist-y.

Bars:
I like Fado's on Clark.
The Hunt Club in the Rush Street bar area is popular with the trophy-wife crowd.
Finn McCool's on Division has table tappers for cheap on Thursday if you're into that kind of thing.
The W bars are popular with the pretentious, trendy crowd.

Eats:
You have to go to the Billy Goat under Michigan near your hotel.
Heaven on Seven at 600 N. Michigan is good cajun food.
Grand Lux Cafe is a tamer Cheesecake Factory, but has good food.
If you want facy, Japonaise is good. Also Bigg's--they had a great Beef Wellington last time I was there.

If you want to bring something nice back for a lady, walk up to the Nordstrom arcade/mall on Michigan and on the second floor there is a great chocolate shop, Vosges. Super fancy and exotic truffles. Women love it!

I'll be on the look out for a big South American camel-like creature walking around the streets of Chicago.
