Gratuitous Weekend Observation

I've heard various formulae of timing, temperature and rainfall amounts that are supposed to bring out the best of fall foliage, many of which seem to contradict each other.

Whatever the proper combination, we evidently did not get it in the Dee Cee region this year - the foliage is looking rather drab and lackluster - weak colors and a tendency to go brown quickly.

Still, I was out doing my end-of-the-year mow and pulling in the porch furniture yesterday afternoon and, even when the colors of the falling leaves are less than spectacular, the sight of them filling a bright blue sky over a deep green lawn after a particularly strong gust of wind and the combined smells of freshly-mown grass and damp, decaying foliage reminded me again why I like this season so much.

I'm note sure of any exact combination of factors, but up here in northeastern Massachusetts we had a ton of rain and above average temperatures for the month of October. Fall foliage was mostly decaying brown this year.

That's sort of what happened here. We had a serious drout in August and September, followed by a lot of rain in October. And while the temperatures were not really hot this past month, we didn't have any serious cold snaps either.

While all that weather observation might be true, we took an absolutely glorious drive up the Pallisades Parkway on Friday to West Point. The trees were beautiful (almost drove off the road a few times looking).
On to a tour of West Point (the Hudson River was in its glory with the autumnal season) and then, to the tailgate for the Army/Navy sprint football game.
After playing a perfectly foul first half, Navy went on to win in the 2nd half during overtime! Needless to say, the tailgate was mobbed! What a beautiful autumn day!
