FLASH IN THE PAN BABES OF THE NINETIES

Today's special: Neve Campbell. Breakthrough career move-the much over-rated touchy feely series Party of Five. Movies: Scream, The Craft, and Wild Things. Most memorable scene on the large or small sceen: the pool lip-lock with Denise Richards, a sure sign of a career on the skids. While those sorts of things are guaranteed to rivet the attention of the male of the species, they are truly acts of career desperation. Last seen going off into the sunset with a suitcase full of cash. Second choice for Jennifer Beals if Sarah Michelle Geller continues to play hard to get?

Actually, in 2003 I think - she did The Company (a rambling Robert Altman film about the Joffrey Ballet - conceived of and brought to Altman by Neve Campbell herself). Neve Campbell started out as a ballerina. This film had a narrow appeal (if you're a dance fanatic, you would definitely love it) - but it definitely suggests that there could most definitely be a second wind in this girl's career. She almost never gets bad reviews, and one reviewer in particular (Roger Ebert) thinks she is the best thing since sliced bread, and any time he writes about her, says: "Get this woman material worthy of her talent!" She has very powerful people in her corner.

Robert Altman ONLY makes movies where he is the creator/auteur/total-control-guy. And yet he made an exception to that when it came to Neve Campbell, and directed somebody else's vision. That vision was hers. Major Hollywood stars line up to work with Robert Altman. She had the guts to send Altman a random note, telling him her idea, asking him if he would be the director. After much consideration and deliberation, he said Yes.

It's not a great film (unless you love dance), but it's a great showcase of Neve Campbell's variable talent, and her gifts as a ballerina.

This past year, Neve was in When Will I Be Loved, which was rather a twisted little tale that I won't go into here, but she was fantastic.

She's no flash in the pan.
