Burning Questions Only The Blogsphere Can Answer

Firefly-Kaylee.jpg

In part because I can't get the Firefly theme out of my head, I thought I would open up a debate brewing in the comments to my recent Serenity post to further discussion on the floor.

Resolved: It is the sense of this community that Kaylee is a Babe.

I won't give my opinion yet except to say that after watching the "Jaynestown" episode last evening, I'm not crabby about being identified with Simon Tam anymore.

UPDATE: I should point out that JohnL ran a SciFi Babe Poll on Firefly a while back. I'm not asking for a rehash of the results of that poll here (as in ranking the Firefly Women). Rather, I'm simply asking whether Kaylee crosses the Babe Frontier.

Oh, great...now I've got "The hero of Canton / The man they call Jayne" stuck in my head.

Yes, that was a bit much. Just throw your mind back to that haunting, sonorous fiddle music in the opening credits instead.

Judging by the above picture alone (which I pretty much must, not yet having watched the show or movie [which I fully realize is full-on heresy for any self-avowed fan of sci-fi TV and/or Joss Whedon's writing -- mea culpa, mea maxima culpa...]), I would vote without question in the affirmative regarding Kaylee's "babe-itude"...

I've had both "The Ballad of Jayne" and the fruity oaty bar song from the movie stuck in my head. They take turns :)

Yup - definite babeitude there.

Not up to Inara levels, but not bad.

Sorry, I'm going to have to have a more, um, "personal" examination.

Posted by: rbj at November 2, 2005 01:38 PM

Depends on the definition of "babe." If by that term you mean a woman of great hotness, then yes, she be a babe. Majorly.

If you mean the standard model/actress/Penthouse pinup Pam Anderson type, then no. Which is a very good thing, in my opinion.

Posted by: TheRoyalFamily at November 2, 2005 01:55 PM

OK, OK. I'll concede the "babe" point. Just not as much a babe as either Zoe or Inara. In other words, she shouldn't have won the poll, which is why we'll have a revote until we get it right...

Posted by: JohnL at November 2, 2005 02:01 PM

I believe there might be some "box to your weight" thinking behind those poll results.

Kaylee is a Babe, but she's not a "Never In A Million Jillion Years Could I Even Dream Of Getting Anywhere NEAR Someone Like This" Babe.

Leastways, that's how I reckon it.

Posted by: Robbo the LB at November 2, 2005 02:53 PM

Kaylee. Babe. Oh yeah.

I like to think that my vote was the decision maker in JohnL's SFBabe poll.

Posted by: Gunner at November 2, 2005 04:08 PM

It is my considered opinion that every female regular castmember on "Firefly" is, to at least some extent, a babe.

Morena Baccarin (Inara)? Delicious.

Gina Torres (Zoe)? Magnificent.

Jewel Staite (Kaylee)? Adorable.

Summer Glau (River)? Impossibly limber. And yes, that's babeworthy.

I've got to give Mark Steyn a thumbs-up for noticing that the real names of the Firefly/Serenity cast members sound much more science-fictional than their characters' names...

Posted by: utron at November 2, 2005 04:36 PM

My problem with River is that she seems too young. I know that Summer Glau is in her mid 20's, but she looks like she's about 15.

Posted by: Robbo the LB at November 2, 2005 05:10 PM

Look, if we're going to debate the resolution, we (or at least I) need a definition of babeage beyond JohnL thinks she's hot.

Posted by: owlish at November 2, 2005 07:30 PM

I just want to live in a world where Summer is the low end of the spectrum...

Babe++

Kaylee is that perfect balance between... "Take her Home to Mom Sweety" and "Makes you want to Squeal Hotty" that transends simple "Scifi Babedome". She is a Babe... pure and simple... irreguardless of the genre. If I could, I would watch her eat strawberries all day long.
