MOVIE BABES OF THE NINETIES

Colossus: this one is for you. Tonight's feature is Jeanne Tripplehorn .Breakthrough flick: Basic Instinct where she played a police shrink. Best line in a movie: "My husband will be home any minute" in The Firm. Best attributes: nice curves, dark eyes, big lips. Unfortunately, she will probably be best remembered as the babe in that global warming epic, Waterworld. (I have to confess, I actually liked the movie although practically no one else did.) Last film of note: Word of Honor, a lame adaptation of the novel of the same name.

Waterworld was a fatal wound in her career, a below-the-waterline gash like the one that did in the Titanic. Seriously -- the downward spiral happened faster than you could yell "Iceberg -- right ahead!"

It's Jeanne Tripplehorn.

I have to confess that I generally watch Waterworld whenever it comes on. Jeanne is a big part of the reason. Another part is a grotesque fascination with the movie's awfulness. I used to think Costner couldn't do any worse. That's until The Postman came out, of course. And yes, I watch that, too.

I find myself stopping to watch it any time I flip past in on TV. Something draws me in, like the inability NOT to gawk when passing a car wreck.

Costner still finds work, though. I still think his best film is Tin Cup. He ain't an action hero. He ought to learn that lesson and get on with life.

I liked Waterworld, too, although I can see why people hated it.
