MOVIE BABES OF THE EIGHTIES AND NINETIES

Tonight's excursion into popular culture features Jami Gertz. Best attributes: dark eyes, nice curves. First decent movie: Twister. Last decent movie: Twister. No sightings on the estrogen channels or skin mags. Sound bite characterization: "an Ally Sheedy wannabe" (courtesy of Mrs. LMC, the Final Authority on All Matters of Popular Culture here at Fort LMC).

Isn't she on a sitcom now or something?

Gratuitous Seinfeld comment: Her voice is tattooed on my brain!

I still think her role on Square Pegs was her high point. That show, in general, is a high point.

Twister actually was a revival of her career; she was also in the late '80s movie "Less Than Zero", which was loosely based on the book by Bret Easton Ellis that was required reading among the cool literary kids back in the day, but now seems to be a completely contrived piece of ephemeral hackery. Which it was the whole time, of course.

Everyone said Jamie Gertz's career was going to go supernova after that movie; thankfully it never did. I think she ended up playing Gilda Radner in a made-for-TV movie, which is, needless to say, somewhere near rock bottom on the hot brunette career arc.

Wasn't she also the female lead in "The Lost Boys" back in the summer of '87? That movie was no "Citizen Kane" but she definitely held her own in that flick.

Although I've never actually seen it, Jami Gertz has been on the sitcom "Still Standing" for the past few years. The show is a Everybody Loves Raymond/King of Queens clone on CBS.

Yup, Lost Boys also, according to IMDB. Forgot about that; I'd have to mark that as the high point of the Jamie Gertz career arc.

Back when Corey Haim and Corey Feldman still had careers.

I'd have to go along with "Square Pegs" as a career high point. A 1982 sitcom with a theme song by the Waitresses was definitely too hip for the room.

Ah, but it also launched the career of Sarah Jessica Parker, which in my book is a pretty big demerit.

Oh please. Sarah Jessica ROCKED in Square Pegs. That was such a great show. I was devastated when they canceled it - I think I was 14 or 15. I actually saw Sarah when she was a little kid, starring on Broadway, as Annie. We're the same age ... so I was overwhelmed by jealousy that she was on Broadway, and I was watching. She was great, though. Great singing voice. I love her in sex and the city, too - but my main memory of her is her as Little Orphan Annie with the red curls, etc. Singing "The sun'll come out ... tomorrow ..."

I do believe that Jami Gertz's character name on Square Pegs was Muffy ... is that right??

Posted by: red at July 22, 2005 02:34 PM

Right you are, red. Muffy Tepperman, I believe.

Posted by: utron at July 22, 2005 02:41 PM

Yes! Tepperman!! hahaha I wonder if that show is on DVD - I would love to see it again.
