Potentially Gratuitous Cranky Musickal Posting (TM)

After having been trapped at a church function earlier this evening, I finally got home and flopped down in front of the teevee. Being in the mood, I popped in what I thought was a bargain bin copy of The Magnificent Seven that the Missus had picked up somewhere. After a minute or two, I realized it was not the original, but some made-for-tee-vee remake. Bag that!

Instead, I popped in our copy of Tombstone. (Sekret Message to LMC: Dana Delany - what happened to her?) If you've seen the movie, you will recall that there is a scene featuring a stage performance in Tombstone, AZ, by a travelling company. They do a Dr. Faustus pantomime to the strains of Camille Saint-Saen's Danse Macabre, one of my favorite pieces from childhood. This struck me as slightly suspicious, so I did a little checking: The gunfight at the OK Corral, around which this film centers, occurred in October, 1881. Danse Macabre was first performed in (I think) Paris, in 1874 and was, admittedly, an instant hit. It is perfectly conceivable that it could have made its way to the frontier in that period, but I am somewhat skeptical.

I simply mention this. If I am being overly paranoid, I do apologize.

My favorite line from Tombstone was Wyatt Earp's "You tell him I'm coming - and Hell is coming with me".

I love Tombstone.

Dana Delany made the mistake of appearing in - dammit, can't remember the name of it - I saw it. It was a movie made of an Anne Rice book, all about bondange, and S&M - It was an enormous flop, and a huge embarrassment for Dana Delany who got horrendous reviews. Her career has never recovered - the movie was that big a bomb. I always liked her, but this was a clear case of an actress trying to "stretch" - and play a role different from the kinds she usually plays. She was crucified in the press for it. I recently read an interview with her, and she speaks of her regrets in deciding to do that movie.

Uh, was it called "Magnificent 7 Ride!" and stars Lee "Il Cattivo" Van Cleef? That one was theoretically a sequel, and did see some kinda measelly theatrical release. It's something of a guilty pleasure of mine, even if it really needs to be named "The Magnificent One, His Love Life, and the Six Idiots He Uses For Cannon Fodder" instead.

If it stars Michael "Kyle Reese" Biehn, then it was in fact a made for tv remake. But I didn't think that one was available on dvd.

Red, I believe you're thinking of "Exit to Eden", notably co-starring Dan Aykroyd and someone named Rosie-something-or-other...
