THE COMING STORM

Anyone who thinks that there is a Supreme Court candidate that Bush will nominate that will somehow avoid the coming storm over confirmation should read the chapters in Robert Bork's book The Tempting of America: the Political Seduction of the Law devoted to his nomination to the Supreme Court. The Gasbag in Winter's speech in the Senate after Reagan nominated Bork sounded alot like the remarks made by Kennedy on Friday after the announcement of O'Connor's retirement with the same references to abortion and civil rights. The only notable difference was that Bush has not even put up a nominee. The libs in the Senate and the media will savage any nominee sent up to Capitol Hill so the president might as well go petal to the metal. It is gut-check time for the Sellout Gang of 14. The safe bet is that the Democrats will cry "extraordinary circumstances"-rookies such as Lindsey Graham will be shocked that his fellow senators reneged on a deal so quickly. McCain will not be but will use the opportunity to go where he always likes to be: in front of a camera.

Yes, but what will he say to that camera? Cuz if he throws down, and sorta gets a SC justice on the bench, that means he's already usurping presidential power - and i mean that in a good way, i guess.

I've been yowling "Rudy Can't Fail" hither and yon, but McCain'd be a good booby prize.

Or are we comfortable in 49-52%-Land

Anyone, by any chance, been to Suagaro (Saguro? some such) Nat'l Park?

Rudy will never be the GOP candidate for President nor will Condoleeza Rice or Colin Powell for the simple reason that they are not pro-life. For better or worse, candidates are chosen by their respective party's base and the GOP is rock-solid pro-life in the same way that no pro-life Democrat will ever be that party's candidate. McCain's distain for the conservative Christian elements of the base shown in 2000 guarantee he will never get far in the 2008 primaries. The base will forgive a lot in a candidate's past--Reagan was the first divorcee elected president and W. was unquestionably a hell-raiser as a younger man but the candidate's platform cannot snub the core beliefs of the base. If a pro-abortion Republican ever got the nomination, he will be faced with the likelihood of a good chunk of his base staying home on Election Day.

As for Sugaro National Park, I have never been there. Worth the trip?
