FINGER ON THE BUTTON

Bill Frist may go nuclear as early as this week. Before he does, I would like to see him force a real filibuster over Janice Rogers Brown. I would like nothing more than to see the former grand kleagle Robert "Sheets" Byrd thunder on for hours about how she is too far out of the mainstream having been re-elected in California with 76 percent of the vote. If Teddy Kennedy is taking requests, I would like the Gasbag in Winter to read aloud from the findings of the coroner's inquest concerning the death of one Mary Jo Kopecne. That would be something to experience.

You hit it right on the head with Kennedy. I too would love to hear the inquest findings and also his lame excuses for the Kopecne tragedy.

The Senate did away with the requirement to actually have ongoing speeches to filibuster many years ago, replacing it with the current system.

The problem under the old rules was that the majority was required to maintain a quorum, while the minority only had to have a few people present to pass the speaking position to.

Some think making the Democrats (in this case) actually speak continuously on CSPAN for days on end would be a Good Thing, as it would demonstrate their bad motivations to the American public. I have doubts about that.
