Today's Required Geek Reading

Jim Geraghty takes down George Lucas. Stop what you're doing and go read this.

YIPS from Steve: Not to mention that he took perhaps the greatest movie villain of all time and turned him into a petulant, pouty, pretty-boy whiner.

I mean, I look at Vader now and all I can hear coming out of the mask is

Caitlin....Chuck wants to kill me...I have no idea why...everyone hates me

My babysitter's time/availability is as scarce as silver bullets and nearly as expensive. I am not going to waste a silver bullet on the next Star Wars flick when the babysitter, tickets, munchies, and a quick dinner will push the cost to about $75. Yes, it is damn ripoff to edit the cantina scene to have Greedo shoot first. Hey GL, how about coming up with a reason why Luke did not have to fire a shot in his X-wing leaving the Hoth system when a good chunk of the Imperial fleet was in orbit to prevent any ships from escaping. Two shots from the ion cannon did not cut it.

I have been noodling with the idea of writing up the first three movies the way they should have been written, while keeping most of the characters.

Ideas so far:
* No Jar Jar
* No Midichlorians
* C3P0 Not built by Anakin
* R2D2 still saves the universe, but without the rocket thrusters that are never seen or used in films IV-VI
* No "virgin birth"; instead, Anakin's mom would be a courtesan, i.e., many possible fathers of young Skywalker; heavy-handed hint that Palpatine is Anakin's father
* Less Yoda, more Windu.

Thoughts so far.

Anniken built 3-PO? I must have been dozing during that part.

Yes he did, from a kit, but somehow, "3PO, I am your father" didn't have quite the same ring to it.

I'm with John though that the biggest travesty was the midichlorians: that was the biggest betrayal of them all.

Same with the Virgin birth crap---that betrays the Joe Campbell/power of myth story line. It's the Moses/Arthur myth which gives the story power, not tacking on the Jeebus angle.

Virgin Birth? Yeah, right!

You have to remember, that simply taking the "word" of a woman, is not adviseable, at least in Biblical Times. . .That's why there are many witnesses involved in the whole Jesus birth process. And if you carefully look at Jesus, the Virgin birth is really not the most important part of the story. . not even close. . .

We're back to simply having "faith", kinda like they must have had back in A.D. 34-55 when the very early days of the church were happening. . .at first the disciples thought Jesus was gone. . .then they realized he wasn't . . .

In Jesus's day, women were considered poor witnesses, at best, and prone to histerics and exaggeration, or perhaps hallucinations, at worst. The idea that women are quite rational, is a much more modern view.

Nowadays our women are so, so very much more honorable, that virtually none of them would ever think of lying. . . .well, wait:

Well, there's Hillary, and Nancy Pelosi, and Barbara Boxer, and that other steely B*tch from California (for years I thought Feinstein had exactly the build and demeanor--it MUST be her inside Darth Vader's costume), and some of those Supreme Court women, and . . .well, maybe there are SOME women liars. . .

There is a pretty good Country song out now. . .apparently we men TAUGHT women how to lie!

I don't know about that. . .I don't know any men who can lie that well! From Mata Hari, to Madeleine Albright, to Mrs. Clinton, you just need to enlist a woman to get your propaganda really started. . .

I mean, I realize there is an art to this, but I think women simply have an advantage due to plenty of positive PR--"snails and puppy dog tails" just don't stack up against "sugar and spice" . . .

I'm not unhappy with the Midichlorians--I don't blame their little bitty butts. I've probably got two or three lonely midichlorians running around in my bloodsteam, while Anakin===OFF THE CHART.

The idea is to establish quickly that the kid is important, and move on into the action part of the movie! Lucas, always does this stuff--make up some new technology that doesn't even make sense, in order to move your action plot along and save room for trick special effects stuff that will have everyone buying your dolls, and paperbacks and comics, and Halloween masks and so forth.

I think the "Trade Federation" stuff is bull. How did these independent planets survive long enough to band together, if, as is implied, they are totally dependent upon shipments from other star systems. . . just goofy, When does Earth get a shipment from another star? We just grow our own, right here in the light of beautiful Sol.
